Laser Hair Removal FAQ’s

What’s the difference between Laser and IPL?

Laser and IPL are very different treatments and you the consumer, need to know exactly what you are paying for. It is important to ensure you know what machine is being used for your treatments. You will find that many companies throughout Australia claim to use “IPL Laser Hair Removal”. This is not genuine Laser Hair Removal and should not be treated or charged as such.

IPL is a cheaper, less effective technology for reducing body hair. Lasers are far more precise and can selectively target dark, coarse hair while leaving the surrounding areas undamaged. Each laser pulse takes a fraction of a second and can treat several hairs at a time.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Laser hair removal should never be an uncomfortable experience. Over the years we have had many clients fall asleep during treatments!

How many sessions will I need?

Most people generally need 6-8 treatments per area treated. That is why we offer pre-pay packages of 6. However 6 is not a magical number, it is just a good starting average for most people. Some people might need more than the initial 6 treatments to achieve their desired results. Some sites, especially the facial area, tend to require more due to hormonal factors, hair depth and density. It is important to be well aware that everyone’s bodies are different and may respond differently, and different sites on the same person can even respond differently. We know that laser hair removal only works on hair that is actively growing. Since not all hair in a given area is in an active growing phase, it is generally recommended that 6 to 8 sessions take place with intervals of 4 to 8 weeks. This will ensure that all hairs in the desired area get treated as they are in this active growing phase.

Will the laser remove all unwanted hair permanently?

The FDA has certified this type of procedure to be labelled as “permanent hair reduction” and cannot be claimed to be a method that delivers “permanent hair removal”. This means that laser hair removal has been determined to be able to permanently reduce the total amount of hair in a given area of skin being treated, but it does not permanently remove all hair in a treated area.

Typically, each laser treatment session can permanently remove 70% to 90% of actively growing hair. The 10% to 30% of hair that does not get permanently removed should grow back finer and lighter in colour. Since not all hair in a particular area of skin is in its active growing phase, multiple sessions over a period of weeks to months will be needed to fully treat an area and make it virtually hair free. New hair follicles can grow after an extended period of time, so maintenance sessions once or twice a year may be required or recommended.

Can all areas of the body be treated?

Provided the hair is dark all areas of the body no matter how large or small can be treated for both men and women including:
Abdomen, Arms, Back, Brazilian (Male & Female), Buttocks, Chest, Ears, Face, Feet, Fingers, Legs, Hairline, Hands, Neck, Nostrils, Shoulders, Underarms
Please book in for a free consultation so we can confirm suitable treatment areas for you.

How do I prepare for a laser session?

Discontinue sun tanning, tanning beds, and the use of self-tanning creams or sprays for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment and throughout the duration of the treatment series. This will reduce the chance of skin colour changes and complications. Always use SPF-30 sunscreen on all exposed treatment areas and re-apply every 2 hours throughout the day. Wear protective clothing, hats and sunglasses etc.

Discontinue the use of exfoliating creams (on areas to be treated) such as Retin-A and glycolic acids and other skin exfoliating products 1 weeks prior to and 1 week after treatment.
The treatment area(s) should be shaved closely and thoroughly the night before or morning of each treatment session. This will ensure optimum results and reduce unnecessary discomfort. We are able to shave the treatment area for you upon request; however there is a $25 shaving charge. If shaving is required please let us know so we can schedule the time into your appointment.

Do NOT tweeze, wax, bleach, use depilatory creams or electrolysis as a method of hair reduction for at least 4 weeks prior to your first treatment, or in between laser treatments. Instead you can shave the area as often as needed.

You should arrive for your treatment with clean skin. There should be no lotion, make-up, perfume, powder, deodorants/anti-perspirants or bath/shower oil present on the skin in the area to be treated. If you have applied a topical anaesthetic prior to treatment, the cream needs to be thoroughly wiped off before the start of the treatment.

For skin tones III-VI (Asian, European & Middle Eastern) or those treating hair growth on the face, we strongly recommend using a tyrosinase inhibitor such as CosMedix Simply Brilliant serum to prevent post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and to ensure we can use the highest possible setting without causing discoloration to the skin. We recommend using this 2–4 weeks before commencing treatment,Can laser treat any hair colour? and continue use throughout treatment.

Can laser treat any hair colour?

Yes, but lighter and finer hair may need more treatments.

Laser hair removal works when the light energy emitted by the laser is reflected by the pale skin around the hair, but absorbed by the darker pigment in the hair. Light/red hair does not absorb the light energy as well as dark hair which transforms it into heat, to destroy the hair and the root, damaging the follicle and preventing regrowth. Therefore the darker and thicker the hair is, the better the results.

Can laser be used on any skin colour?

The DEKA again machine is designed to treat tanned and darker skin types safely as well as light skin. However, it is best to be as pale as you can possibly be while having laser treatments. The laser is attracted to pigment (colour) and cannot tell the difference between the pigment in the hair follicle and the pigment in the skin. The laser will just heat everything that is dark. The darker the colour of the skin, the more competition the hair has. This lessens the effectiveness of the treatment. It is also important that spray tanning, self tanning creams and lotions, tanning beds and direct unprotected sun exposure on the areas to be treated be discontinued two weeks prior to laser treatments.

Does laser get rid of ingrown hairs?

Absolutely! It can help greatly reduce (if not eliminate) ingrown hairs and other issues such as irritation from shaving and waxing.

Do you offer Brazilian laser treatments for males?

Yes, we provide Brazilian laser treatments for both female and male clients. Our technicians are experienced and professional. Receiving a Brazilian laser treatment is really not as awkward or painful as people picture in their minds.

How long do I have to wait before I see results?

Depending on the size of the treatment area, results will be noticeable from 1 – 2 weeks after your first treatment and will become more noticeable after each treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Laser hair removal treatments are extremely safe and our technicians are qualified laser therapists who also possess Laser Safety Certificates. The laser light emitted penetrates the skin and then enters the hair follicle. By doing so, the laser light succeeds in damaging the hair follicle, thus making it impossible to grow hair again. Though the laser light is transformed into heat when it reaches the follicle, it does not cause any harm to the skin.

For most people, there will be some erythema (redness) and edema (small raised welt like bumps). Your skin may also be a little swollen. Areas that have very thick, dark dense hair will be more prone to this. It may feel similar to the sensation of sunburn. This usually resolves 15-45 minutes after treatment, however it can persist for a day or two in some clients. Use of our Post Laser Gel and cold packs post treatment can help ease this reaction. A soothing cooling gel will always be applied to your skin by the therapist immediately after treatment. It is recommended you continue moisturising at home after and in between treatments.

Can laser promote hair growth?

Our bodies are constantly changing and as we age, some people will lose body hair and some may grow more in new places. Laser can destroy your hair follicles but cannot prevent new ones from developing. Laser hair removal will definitely help to reduce hair in any area of the face or body, because the heat from the laser device is so strong that it severely and permanently damages the hair follicles.

A rare but significant adverse effect with this treatment is paradoxical hypertrichosis (paradoxical laser hair stimulation). This refers to the hairs having a reverse effect to the laser treatment. Less than 5% of patients experience this adverse reaction. Rather than the hairs follicles being destroyed, the laser triggers additional hair growth, either on the treatment areas or parallel to treatment areas. Those at risk of hypertrichosis are often skin types III-VI (Asian, European & Middle Eastern skin tones). Areas that are prone to stimulation are the face/neck for women, and back/shoulders for men. To help avoid this reaction we don’t treat vellus (fine) hairs. While it may be very tempting to treat them, they are rarely visible to anyone and it is best to leave them alone. We also ensure clients use a tyrosinase inhibitor (pigment blocking serum) to enable us to use the highest possible setting on the skin. It should also be noted hormonal, possible medications, and underlining conditions can also promote hair growth.

Can you have laser over tattoos?

No. The laser would pull some of the pigment out of the tattoo and the intense heat from going over the pigment would burn and blister the skin. We will carefully work around any tattoos in the area to be treated. This is good to keep in mind BEFORE getting a tattoo if an area has unwanted hair and requires laser hair removal.

Is it safe to have laser while pregnant?

At Bare Body we advise our clients against laser hair removal treatments during pregnancy. The lasers we use are the industry standard for hair removal worldwide and although there is no scientific proof that laser hair removal can negatively effect a fetus, we prefer to err on the side of caution and not treat clients until after the birth. We are able to treat clients that are trying to conceive but ask that you inform us as soon as you find out you are pregnant. If excess hair grow is bothering you during your pregnancy, temporary solutions during this time can be an option. Post birth laser hair removal treatments can be commenced. For clients that choose to breastfeed we also advise waiting 6 months from the time you stop breastfeeding to resume laser treatments. This allows your hormones to return to normal.

What is the minimum age?

There is no minimum age requirement. It is common for teenage girls to receive laser hair removal treatments on areas such as the upper lip and underarms. Due to hormonal changes during puberty, we prefer clients to be past the prime of puberty prior to treatment. Generally, we do not recommend laser hair removal for young teens or children since there are many hormonal changes yet to come in these younger clients and their results will likely not be long lasting. If a client is under 18, we require a parent to sign parental consent forms and treatments will undertaken at our discretion.
